Assignment 3: Core Multimedia Skills

The multimedia object I selected is the infographic I designed in week 4 about coffee tasting.

Before: Week 4 infographic on coffee tasting.

Learning Objectives

After reading the infographic, the learners will be able to:

  • Know the six aspects of tastes in coffee tasting
  • Know what types of coffee is appropriate for conducting tasting on
  • Understand how to look for each aspects of tastes
  • Understand where the flavors come from to better identify the tastes
  • Apply the knowledge to real-life coffee tasting

Upgrading Rationales

The original content on coffee tasting is thin. Judging from a learner’s perspective, the only information they get from this infographic is that when they taste a cup of coffee, they should try and taste from the six aspects: sweetness, flavors, acidity, body, bitterness and aftertaste. Learners still don’t know the standard for each aspect or how they could distinguish these aspects of tastes, or identify them at all. Therefore, I upgraded it in order for it to make more sense.

The upgraded version showing in the next section is more effective at increasing knowledge transfer for the following reasons.

First, there is more useful information that relates to the topic of coffee tasting compared to the original version. The information makes more sense because it extends the content on the six aspects of coffee tasting. Learners could understand and apply the information in coffee tasting rather than being in the first stage of only knowing the six aspects according to Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Second, the upgraded version uses segmenting and breaks down coffee tasting into six sections. It explains the six aspects of tastes in smaller steps so that learners could control their own paces in learning to taste coffee and detecting these different aspects of tastes.

Third, infographic is a form of presentation. However, the content I have is very technical and is difficult to use images to replace the texts. So I followed the multimedia principles of presenting only one idea per page to simplify it, and using illustrative images to make it more interesting and appealing.
